Layoff information from Maine Department of Labor

CAB is working to bring you relevant, business-related, COVID-19 information during this time. We are all feeling an impact on our businesses, and encourage you to reach out to us with your announcements, or ideas to help support one another while we all work through this. Stay well, wash your hands, and enjoy the company of the ones you are with. We're all in this together!

A message from Maine Department of Labor’s Rapid Response team.

Whenever a layoff or business closing occurs, the Maine Department of Labor’s Rapid Response service is available to assist those being laid-off. We’d like to offer this outline of some available services:

  • Unemployment Compensation…this weekly benefit may be available to workers who have lost a job through no fault of their own. Unemployment business is conducted most effectively via the Internet. There is no physical unemployment office to visit. Filing an initial or weekly claim may be done online at www.maine.gov/reemployme. Questions regarding unemployment can be answered by a call center representative at 1-800-593-7660. To be eligible for unemployment compensation, you must be registered as a job seeker on the Maine Job Link which can be accessed at www.joblink.maine.gov.

  • CareerCenter Services…The Maine Department of Labor’s network of CareerCenters is a resource for a variety of re-employment programs and services. You can receive assistance with your job search through job matching on the Maine JobLink (matching your skills and experience to available job openings), workshops on the fundamentals of a successful job search (resume/cover letter and interview workshops), and job training (sometimes necessary to become re-employed). There are 12 CareerCenters located throughout Maine with information at www.mainecareercenter.gov. Additional services may be available for military Veterans and those with disabilities.

  • Health Care and Health Insurance…this is often a concern for someone who has lost a job. Consumers for Affordable Health Care is a consumer advocacy organization that can provide you with information on possible options for insurance and medical care through their ‘Helpline” at 1-800-965-7476.

Additional information is available about a wide variety of state and local programs and services either online at www.maine.gov  or by phone by calling ‘211’.

This information sheet of some Department of Labor services to any business affected by COVID-19, can be copied and distributed to employees facing a layoff. Click here for the PDF.

If you have any questions about available services, please contact your local CareerCenter.
