How I started my YouTube channel

Writer: Octavia BishopOctavia Bishop

When I started my YouTube channel, it was (and still) is because I had the idea that I wanted to remember the beautiful places I visited. I knew it wouldn't be perfect, but it is where my love of creating videos really began. It was just plain fun for me.

I remember the first morning waking in Australia. I heard an unfamiliar bird. It was a magpie. I'm from Maine so I never saw any of those birds. I couldn't wait to explore the area and see other things.

Never was I ever interested in birds before but let me tell you, I quickly became the biggest nerd for bird watching.

After all, the birds in Australia are absolutely beautiful and so colorful. The more I explored, the more I wanted to figure out. Taking my new binoculars with me, I'd watch osprey birds catch fish straight out of the ocean and fight over which post they would eat it on. To me, it was like watching my own episode of David Attenborough.

I swear the laughing Kookaburra bird was in the movie the Wizard of Oz. That bird sounds like a monkey to me.

One time while camping, a bunch of us were relaxing under these trees, and tons of black cockatoos flew over us and started to eat the nuts from above. These nuts are huge and they started dropping them all over us. We all had to get up outta there quick!

Everything was different in Australia. The plants, trees, smells, sounds, animals. I wanted to see it all. There were all these fun stories and characteristics that came with the birds.

I had my nerdy bird identification books. I was down to the point of recognizing the calls they made so I could follow them and take pictures. It became a great hobby for me and a very relaxing thing to do, all while seeing Australia.

Just like that, one day I got the idea to paint birds outdoors. I always wanted to try but instead of being in the open with gawkers, I would find a spot where no one could find me. It wasn't very hard to do. The whole idea was for me to not only record the places I'd seen but have a finished painting at the end. Yes, I loved that idea, and so it began.

Basically, I packed a bag with art supplies and food, got up early, and went exploring until I found a quiet spot to paint. I made time-lapses of my process. There were videos of nature and me painting and I loved choosing music to go with the scenes. It was satisfying for me to create these videos and watch them after. I still watch them to this day. Some of them bring back great memories and I'm proud I did it.

This is me in the middle of nowhere making coffee.

This is one of my videos of me painting in Australia.

I still kept creating videos even when I left Australia. Whenever I painted. Timelapses are just a fun way to watch you get it done and remember things. It also shows others your process from start to finish.

Here's a video I made while home visiting. My mom and stepdad and I went on a road trip during the fall. Then I made my sister her horse painting she wanted.

My newest timelapse videos are of mural work, which was so much fun creating. ( Painting and video making )

I will continue to make the videos because like I said, they are fun and make me proud.
